One day after it appeared that Rocky McIntosh had made the Detroit Lions’ season-opening 53-man roster, the veteran linebacker got released.

The Lions made the move Sunday in order to create a roster spot for 6-foot, 208-pound safety DeJon Gomes, who was reportedly claimed off waivers. The Lions are waiting until after Gomes passes a physical to officially announce the transaction.

Gomes, 23, a fifth-round draft pick in 2011 out of Nebraska, made eight starts and played in 30 games over the last two seasons for the Washington Redskins. Gomes was released Saturday by the Redskins.

The Lions, meanwhile, announced that they put eight players on their practice squad who had been released the day before. The group consists of offensive guard Rodney Austin, running back Shaun Chapas, receiver Corey Fuller, cornerback Chris Greenwood, linebacker Brandon Hepburn, running back/return specialist Steven Miller, and defensive tackles Xavier Proctor and Jimmy Saddler-McQueen.

Detroit’s regular-season opener is next Sunday at Ford Field against the Minnesota Vikings.
