CHELYABINSK, Russia (AP) Sven Kramer took a record seventh European allround speedskating title Sunday as he and fellow Dutch skater Ireen Wust won their respective events in Russia.
Kramer was second behind fellow Dutch skater Koen Verweij going into the 10,000 meters, the last of the four events over two days, but beat Verweij by 9 seconds to overtake him in the overall standings, finishing with 149.928 points.
Kramer had previously won Saturday's 5,000. His victory means he passes the tally of six championship wins set by Rintje Ritsma of the Netherlands between 1994 and 2000.
Reigning world allround champion Verweij, who won the opening 500 sprint Saturday, scored 150.107, ahead of Russia's Denis Yuskov, who won Sunday's 1,500 on his way to scoring 150.696.
In the women's competition, Wust won her third consecutive European allround speedskating title, and fourth in total, beating longtime rival Martina Sablikova.
Wust won the 500 and 1,500, finishing with a total of 161.734 points.
Sablikova, of the Czech Republic, was aiming for her fifth European allround title and won the 3,000 and 5,000 but was forced to settle for second place on 162.414.
Linda de Vries of the Netherlands was third with a total score of 163.695.
Some members of the Dutch team, the dominant power in speedskating, last month said they were considering a boycott of the championships in protest against alleged Russian involvement in the shooting down of a Malaysian Airlines flight from Amsterdam over Ukraine last year. All of the Dutch skaters eventually opted to compete at Chelyabinsk's Ural Lightning arena.
