Kings reach one-year deal with Trevor Lewis

Forward Trevor Lewis and the Kings avoided salary arbitration, reaching a one-year deal worth a reported $1.325 million.

Tuesday's announcement comes one day after Lewis was among the 48 players invited to Team USA's orientation camp in late August. Lewis, a restricted free agent, had been scheduled to go to arbitration on Aug. 2.

Lewis, 26, made $750,000 this past season, in which he appeared in all 48 games and recorded a career-high 14 points.

Team USA's camp will be Aug. 26-27 and among the other invitees are Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick and captain Dustin Brown. Officials from USA Hockey discussed the preliminary selections on a conference call Tuesday morning.

The final roster for the Sochi Olympics is expected to be announced in late December. Players will not be on the ice at the Team USA orientation camp because of the high cost of insurance, officials said.

"Trevor Lewis was a name that got brought up in our group," said David Poile, who is the general manager of the 2014 U.S. Olympic men's hockey team.

"Probably a player that is not as much a household name as some of the other players that we've chosen, [but] one of the guys who has some of the characteristics we could be looking for, for Sochi," Poile said of Lewis. "A tenacious, hard-working player. Statistics -- goals and assists -- is not why he is going to be making the team. He's one of those players that could capture a fourth-line role, to be your energy, grit, shut-down type of guy."

Poile, who is Nashville's president of hockey operations/general manager, made a bit of a comparison to the New York Rangers' Ryan Callahan from four years ago in explaining why Lewis will be getting a look.

"What I'm trying to say is that Ryan probably wasn't as known as well to a lot of people -- we just felt that he might be the type of player to fit the mold in what we were looking to be successful in Vancouver," Poile said. "His game got better and better and now he's the captain of the Rangers and I'm sure he's going to be a big part of our team in Sochi.

"Trevor Lewis, it's a bit of a look at a guy that has some characteristics we might want on our team."
