Apparently, that Twin Cities appearance by Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant back in May was more than a friendly visit.
After scoring a season-high 17 points Sunday night in Minnesota's 91-59 victory over Phoenix, Lynx guard Monica Wright confirmed to reporters Durant requested her hand in marriage. The four-time NBA All-Star popped the question Saturday night, hoping to wed a friend he's known since their days of dominating high school basketball in the Washington, D.C., area.
She said yes, of course.
The pair did well to keep the romantic side of their relationship hush-hush. But it's no secret they've remained close since meeting at the 2006 McDonald's All-American games.
On Tuesday, May 21, Durant sat courtside for an exhibition at the Target Center to watch Wright play. He made national headlines that day, donating $1 million to aid tornado relief efforts in Moore, Okla.
Durant may also have been contemplating when to make his proposal.
He'll marry a woman climbing up the WNBA ranks. The Lynx's first option off the bench this season, Wright averages 23.8 minutes, 9.7 points and 2.5 assists per outing. She can play both the point and shooting guard spots and will even jump on the wing as a small forward occasionally.
"I'm just excited for her, stepping into a new role," Durant said at halftime of the preseason game he attended several weeks ago. "I'm looking forward to watching her play."
After Saturday, the basketball-playing pair has a whole lot more than that to anticipate.
