JERUSALEM (AP) The Jerusalem municipality says a Kenyan runner, 25-year-old Kipkogey Shadrack, won this year's marathon in the holy city with a time of 2:16:33.

Main roads closed for traffic Friday as the race weaved through central Jerusalem and the cobblestone alleyways of the Old City.

About 25,000 athletes from Israel as well as a record 2,500 foreign visitors took part, Jerusalem city spokeswoman Brachie Sprung said ahead of the event.

Police said over a thousand officers secured the sporting event, which comes amid 6 months of near-daily Palestinian attacks on civilians and security forces.

Since mid-September, Palestinians have killed 28 Israelis and two Americans in stabbing, shooting and vehicular attacks. At least 184 Palestinians died by Israeli fire over the same period, the majority Israel says were assailants.
