K-State PG Angel Rodriguez transferring to Miami
Kansas State point guard Angel Rodriguez announced he was transferring to the University of Miami after visiting the school Wednesday.
Rodriguez, who said he wanted to transfer from Kansas State in order to be closer to home, went to high school in Miami and has family in Puerto Rico. He averaged 11.4 points and 5.2 assists as a sophomore for the Wildcats last season and was an All-Big 12 second-team selection.
“Angel is an exceptional point guard,” Miami coach Jim Larranaga told the Miami Herald. “When you watch him you immediately notice his ball-handling and passing skills. He can also hit the open shot … He has a pass-first mentality, but if he sees an open lane, he won’t hesitate to attack. We feel very, very good about Angel joining our program.”
The Hurricanes are in need of a point guard after All-ACC first-team selection Shane Larkin announced Sunday that he was declaring for the NBA Draft with two years of eligibility remaining.
NCAA rules require athletes to sit out a year after transferring, but Rodriguez will reportedly seek a hardship waiver. If the waiver is not granted, Rodriguez will not be eligible until the 2014-15 season.
