His appointment was announced Thursday by Gov. Jerry Brown. Derek had most recently been first vice chair of the board that governs the sport in California.

Solis says he's looking forward to adding another perspective to the board, having ridden for 34 years. The 51-year-old jockey was named to the racing hall of fame last year.

Derek led efforts to improve the health, safety and welfare of horses and riders by requiring riders to wear improve safety helmets and vests, restricting a wide range of medications; and improving the construction and use of riding crops.
