Jerry Jones: Romo vs. Giants could be his greatest game as Cowboy

Having had time to review the tape, Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones backed up his rave review of Tony Romo's big day against the Giants on Sunday.

Following the 31-21 win, Jones asserted that Romo's 17-of-23, 279-yard, three-touchdown performance might have been the best game of his lengthy career. Asked what made him so sure of that on Tuesday, Jones had an obvious reason in mind.

"First of all, we won it," Jones said in an interview with 105.3 FM The Fan.

That's a big point, considering the outcome of one of Romo's last big outing. Jones himself brought up the quarterback's amazing 506-yard, five-touchdown day against Denver last season. As everyone no doubt remembers, though, the Broncos won that game after Romo threw a costly interception in the waning minutes.

"A year ago against Denver, people would have a big argument that that was one of the greatest duels, between him and Peyton," Jones said. "But we won this game, and we won it with him not making bad plays and making absolutely great throws and great plays — and that's it."

With DeMarco Murray pounding away for 128 yards, Romo continued his 2014 trend of high percentage passing — 74 percent on the day. He has only gone above 300 yards once this season, but the lapses in judgment have been few and far between. His lone interception against the Giants only came when Dez Bryant slipped and fell on a deep pattern.

"You've got a player that is not only making it happen, but he's also keeping the other team from taking advantage of our mistakes," Jones said. "I thought his game, still do, thought it was outstanding when we looked at how he played, evaluated it on tape, film. It was just as good, and I put it right there."

If not for the interception to Prince Amukamara, Romo would have finished the game with a passer rating of 157.7 — the closest to a perfect rating of 158.3 he had ever come. Such as it is, his actual rating of 135.7 ranks No. 11 of his games as the Cowboys' starting quarterback.

"It's hard to pick the greatest game, but that was a great game by him. I don't have any problem saying it could be his best," Jones said.
