Japanese right-hander Yu Darvish is making what the Texas Rangers hope is one of many visits to the Metroplex.
General manager Jon Daniels confirmed that Darvish in town, but declined to comment on the visit.
“Yu Darvish and his representatives are visiting Texas this week,” said the Rangers in a statement released by the club. “It is the first time that Mr. Darvish has visited to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and he felt it was appropriate to make the trip at this time. No details of his visit are being released.”
The Rangers won the rights to negotiate with Darvish last month when they bid $51.7 million for the posting rights for Darvish, who pitched for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters. Texas has until 4 p.m. central time Jan. 18 to complete a deal with Darvish.
If the sides are unable to come to terms, the Rangers lose the rights to Darvish but do not have to pay the posting fee. Daniels said after the Rangers won the rights to negotiate with Darvish that the club would have no further comments on the negotiations.
