'Jacks host N.M. Highlands on FOX Sports Arizona
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Northern Arizona won its last five regular-season games at the Walkup Skydome and will look to make it six in a row Saturday when the No. 24 Lumberjacks host New Mexico Highlands in NAU's 2014 home opener.
The game will be televised live on FOX Sports Arizona beginning at 4 p.m. Mitch Strohman will provide the play-by-play and former NAU quarterback Kevin Stephens will offer color commentary as the Lumberjacks and Cowboys meet for the first time since 2008.
NAU was voted No. 24 in the latest The Sports Network FCS Top 25 Poll. The Lumberjacks also earned a No. 22 ranking in the College Sports Madness Weekly Poll.
NAU came away with a 27-21 victory over Abilene Christian on Sept. 6 to earn its first win of the season. Junior quarterback Kyren Poe had a career-high night in the win. He recorded a career-high 293 passing yards and 31 completions. Poe finished 31 for 42 (73.8 percent), including a 24-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Alex Holmes, and a three-yard rushing touchdown.
Holmes also had a career-high night with 119 receiving yards in his second straight 100-yard game. On the defensive side of the ball, junior linebacker Austin Hasquet registered a career-high 13 tackles, while Siupeli Anau had two sacks, and Eddie Horn tallied his second interception of the season.
New Mexico Highlands opened the season with a 44-21 loss to Eastern New Mexico. Lance Orender threw for 415 yards and three touchdowns in last week's loss.
The last time the Cowboys won on the road was Sept. 7, 2013, at Eastern New Mexico, 31-28.
