When the Braves gave free agent pitcher Derek Lowe a four-year, $60 million contract before the 2009 season, they were desperate.
The rotation had been in shambles the season before, with ace Tim Hudson recovering from Tommy John elbow surgery and Jorge Campillo actually being a relevant starter. They had missed out on a trade for Jake Peavy and on free agent A.J. Burnett.
Then last season, Lowe did was he does - he won 15 games and gave the Braves right at 200 innings and 21 quality starts. That was the good part.
The bad part was his 4.67 ERA, and it was somewhat of a helter-skelter 2009 season.
