Iowa State beats Southern in season opener
AMES, Iowa (AP) -- Percy Gibson led three Iowa State players with double-doubles by scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds as Iowa State beat Southern 82-59 on Friday night in both teams' season opener.
Senior transfer Will Clyburn had 16 points and 10 rebounds and freshman Georges Niang had 15 and 12 for the Cyclones, who shook off a rough start to win their 15th straight opener.
Southern led by as many as 11 points midway through the first half. But Iowa State pulled ahead 41-39 at halftime and opened the second half on a 25-11 run.
Derick Beltran had a game-high 26 points for Southern.
Korie Lucious, a transfer from Michigan State, shot just 1 of 12 from the field with seven turnovers in his Iowa State debut. But a strong second half carried the Cyclones to a convincing victory.
