IRVING – Cowboys coach Jason Garrett spent a good chunk of his Monday morning press conference discussing injuries and the progress his players are making.
Here's a roundup of what Garrett had to say about cornerback Orlando Scandrick, wide receiver Miles Austin and running backs Felix Jones and DeMarco Murray.
Scandrick had surgery Friday on a spiral fracture in his left hand. Scandrick suffered the injury during the second quarter of a 38-31 loss to the Washington Redskins on Thanksgiving Day. Garrett said the surgery "went well" but the nickel corner is "going to be out for a little bit."
"We don't know how long he will be out," Garrett said. "We'll just take him day-by-day and see how he is. We don't anticipate him being available immediately."
Austin exited during the first quarter Thursday with a right hip strain.
"I think he's banging away," Garrett said of Austin. "He's been dealing with a hamstring injury for most of the year. He's just been kind of fighting through that. He has this hip, low back thing that happened the other day in the ballgame. He's day-by-day."
Garrett did have some good news regarding Jones, saying that "he seems healthy coming out of the ballgame." Jones rushed for 14 yards on six carries against the Redskins. He also caught three passes for 47 yards and a touchdown.
"I think the extra few days will help him going forward," Garrett said. "He was dealing with a knee injury and then he hurt the other knee. As you guys know, your legs as a running back are really, really important to you."
Murray's return date still seems to be a mystery. The second-year back has missed the last six games with a left foot sprain.
"He's chomping at the bit to play and we just have to be patient with him and make sure that he's doing everything necessary before we put him in a situation to practice and then play in the ballgame," Garrett said. "He's certainly made progress the last few days."
