Indians ace Masterson leaves start in 2nd inning
CLEVELAND -- Indians starter Justin Masterson left his start Monday against Baltimore in the second inning.
The Indians announced he had soreness in his left rib cage. No more details were available, but if Masterson strained or injured an oblique muscle, it could bring into question whether he pitches the rest of the season.
The Indians noticed some discomfort after Masterson threw a pitch to Matt Wieters. Manager Terry Francona and the Indians trainer visited with Masterson on the mound, but did not take him out of the game. Masterson gave up a single to Wieters and wasn't even throwing 90 mph. When he paused between pitches to Nick Markakis, shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera waved Francona back on the field.
Masterson has been the Indians No. 1 starter this season, and started the Labor Day game 3 1/2 games out of the wild card. An injury that keeps him out for any length of time would be significant.
