Hundreds occupy land near Cup stadium in Brazil
SAO PAULO (AP) Brazil police say at least 1,000 people are building shacks on land they've occupied near the stadium that will host the World Cup's opening match on June 12.
Sgt. Artur Paz of the Sao Paulo police department says the land is less than 2 miles from Sao Paulo's Itaquerao Stadium.
Paz says the occupation on Saturday was peaceful and evictions aren't planned for now.
The Homeless Workers Movement undertook the occupation. The movement claims around 1,000 families, rather than about 1,000 people, occupied the land.
The group says on its website that more than $500 million have been spent to build the stadium, while thousands of people don't have a place to live or money to pay rent.
