Holloway leads Xavier over Wake Forest 83-75

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Point guard Terrell "Tu" Holloway had a
triple-double and center Kenny Frease scored a career-high 22 points on
Saturday night, leading Xavier to an 83-75 victory over Wake Forest as
part of the Skip Prosser Classic.

Wake Forest (6-5) hosted the initial game
of the series honoring the coach, winning in double overtime last
season. For the rematch, the Demon Deacons tried to end the nation's
second-longest home-court winning streak.

The Musketeers (7-2) made it a
school-record 29 straight behind Frease, a 7-foot center emerging as a
consistent scoring threat. He had his third double-double in the last
four games, also getting 14 rebounds.

Holloway had 12 points and career highs
with 14 assists and 10 rebounds. It was the first triple-double by a
Xavier player since forward David West had one against Long Island on
Dec. 8, 2001. West and Prosser were inducted into Xavier's Hall of Fame
before the game.

J.T. Terrell led Wake Forest with 27 points. Ty Walker had eight blocks, three shy of his season high.

Wake Forest was coming off a 69-67 win
over North Carolina-Greensboro that featured a lineup change. Coach
Jeff Bzdelik moved senior guard Gary Clark, 7-foot freshman center
Carson Desrosiers and junior transfer Nikita Mescheriakov into the
starting lineup, and got a win. He stayed with the combination against
Xavier.

Shortly before the tipoff, Xavier played
a tribute to Prosser on the overhead videoboard. It ended with coach
Chris Mack noting that Wake Forest won last season's game, then adding
that "it's our turn to win one for coach."

The Musketeers came out energized and ran
out to a 12-2 lead. Dante Jackson had a pair of 3s and a fastbreak
layup off a steal. Wake Forest had trouble doing anything with the ball
-- six turnovers in the first five minutes.

The 3-pointer is one of the Demon
Deacons' best weapons, and they turned to it to make a comeback.
Terrell and Travis McKie hit from behind the arc during an eight-point
run that cut the lead to 14-12 -- the closest they would get the rest
of the way.

Emotions spilled over into a double
technical midway through the first half. Holloway and Terrell got
whistled for an exchange after a foul under the basket.

A pair of dunks started Xavier's 10-2
run that rebuilt the lead to 33-21. The Demon Deacons had trouble
handling Frease, who shot over any defender in his way. He had 12
points and six rebounds at halftime, with the Musketeers up 39-30.

Holloway was cut above his left eyebrow
and sat out the closing minutes of the first half. He started the
second half with a bandage above the eye and a new jersey -- No. 1,
with no name on the back, replacing his blood-specked one.

The number fit. He made his first shot
of the half, a 3-pointer, and repeatedly passed inside for baskets.
Frease's floater over Walker made it 66-49 with 7:06 to go. The
Musketeers were never in trouble after that, giving up some open
baskets with reserves on the floor in the final minute that got the
lead under double-digits.
