Quarterback Denard Robinson plans to return to the Michigan football team, new coach Brady Hoke told a radio sportscaster Thursday.
Robinson was noncommittal about his plans after Rich Rodriguez was fired as coach. Robinson has been adamant that he wants to remain at quarterback. There was concern that Hoke prefers a pro-style offense, which doesn't fit Robinson's style. Robinson ran the read-option under Rodriguez.
When asked directly by sportscaster Bill Simonson whether Robinson had informed him whether he will stay at Michigan, Hoke answered, "Yes. Yes. Yeah, we've had great conversations. He is a tremendous young man."
Earlier in the interview, Hoke said, "We've had really positive and great conversations. The one thing I can tell you, he wants to have a Michigan degree when he's done here. He wants to be a guy who's part of a great football team and part of that great tradition."
As for how Robinson might be used in the offense, Hoke said, "We're not going to try to put a square peg into a round hole. Denard is capable of doing a lot of different things. He's a playmaker."
Contacted Thursday night, Robinson's mother, Dorothea, said she did not want to confirm her son's decision, preferring to let Denard make the announcement.
Hoke, who coached the last two seasons at San Diego State, was hired by Michigan Tuesday. He met with Robinson both Wednesday and again Thursday.
