Hawkins out in return to Cincinnati
CINCINNATI -- Andrew Hawkins won't get to play against his former teammates after all.
The Browns made Hawkins, their leading receiver, one of their seven inactives for Thursday night's AFC North game against the Bengals at Paul Brown Stadium. Tight end Jordan Cameron will also miss the game, his second in a row because of a concussion, leaving Cleveland without two of its top offensive weapons in a battle for first place in the division. The Browns will have defensive tackle Phil Taylor back in the lineup after he has missed the last four games with a knee injury.
Hawkins signed with the Browns as a restricted free agent this past offseason after playing for the Bengals the previous three seasons. He suffered thigh and knee injuries in last Sunday's 22-17 win against Tampa Bay. He was out on the field during pre-game warmups but not participating in any drills. Rookie Taylor Gabriel is expected to make his first career start in place of Hawkins, while Jim Dray will start for Cameron.
The other inactives for the Browns are: defensive backs Johnson Bademosi, Robert Nelson and Pierre Desir, running back Glenn Winston and offensive lineman Vinston Painter.
There were no surprises on the Bengals inactive list. Running back Giovani Bernard (hip/clavicle), cornerback Leon Hall (concussion), linebackers Vontaze Burfict (knee) and Rey Maualuga (hamstring), and right tackle Andre Smith (ankle) had all either been declared out for the game earlier in the week or were listed as doubtful on Wednesday's injury report.
Marshall Newhouse is expected to start at right tackle in place of Smith, while Jeremy Hill will start his second game in a row in place of Bernard. Nico Johnson and Vinny Rey will start in place of Maualuga and Burfict, while Adam Jones will replace Hall at cornerback.
