H.S. coach accused of spanking players
A high school boys basketball coach in Mississippi is accused in a lawsuit of whipping three of his players with a belt, the Clarion-Ledger reported Wednesday.
A six-second cell phone video purportedly shows one of the whippings at Murrah High School in Jackson, Miss.
Attorney Lisa Ross, who filed the federal lawsuit Tuesday on behalf of the three players, said the man in the video is head basketball coach Marlon Dorsey. Ross called the whippings "outrageous."
Also named in the lawsuit were assistant coach Brandon Sanders and Murrah Principal Freddrick Murray. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages, accusing Dorsey of violating the players' privacy and inflicting emotional distress.
Dorsey has not commented on the lawsuit, but Ross said he has admitted to whipping players. He has been on leave from the school since late October.
Dorsey allegedly whipped players on the buttocks with a five-to-ten-pound belt during practice for failing to run plays correctly. He also allegedly told them if they did not accept the punishment they would be dismissed from the team, and called them names like "wimp" and "sissy."
