Matt Guerrier's return to Minnesota is finally here.
The Twins announced after Wednesday's game that the right-handed reliver will be recalled from Triple-A Rochester. To make room for Guerrier on the roster, left-hander Logan Darnell was optioned back to Rochester.
Guerrier was invited to big-league spring training this year after signing a minor-league deal with the Twins this winter. He worked his way back from elbow surgery and started the 2014 season in the minors. In four outings with the Red Wings, Guerrier allowed four earned runs in five innings with three strikeouts and two walks.
The 35-year-old Guerrier began his career with the Twins and spent seven years with Minnesota from 2004-10. He also played for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs before rejoining the Twins organization this offseason. Guerrier has a career 3.51 ERA and a 1.254 WHIP in 528 appearances.
Darnell, 25, made his major-league debut on Tuesday against Cleveland and pitched three scoreless innings. The former Kentucky Wildcat was a starter with Triple-A Rochester prior to his first-ever call-up to the big leagues.
"Tough to do. We like what we saw," manager Ron Gardenhire said of Darnell. "A good performance by him. He understands it's just something we've got to do to get back. We're going to take Matty Guerrier up here and see what happens. The guy's worked very hard. He's got good stuff. We'll see how he fits in our bullpen, and then we'll work our way from there."
