Griner to sit out All-Star Game with knee sprain

UNCASVILLE, Conn (AP) -- Brittney Griner will miss Saturday's WNBA All-Star Game while recovering from a sprained left knee she suffered earlier this month.

The rookie center sat out the Mercury's last five games before the break and will be replaced on the Western Conference roster by the Storm's Tina Thompson, who announced earlier this season that she would retire after the year. This will be her ninth All-Star appearance, the most in league history.

Griner, the first overall pick in the WNBA draft, is averaging 14.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and a league-leading 2.8 blocks this season.

She may be joined on the sidelines this weekend by Sky rookie Elena Delle Donne. The No. 2 pick in the draft this past April suffered a concussion Wednesday and is questionable to play Saturday. Delle Donne was the first rookie to finish with the most All-Star votes.
