Grevers wins gold, silver at World Championships

Arizona volunteer assistant and six-time Olympic medalist Matt Grevers earned one gold and one silver medal at the FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain.
 
Grevers won the 100 backstroke in 52.93 seconds, beating out his U.S. teammate David Plummer (53.12) and France’s Jeremy Stravius (53.21). Grevers won the 100 back at last summer's Olympics in London and was a silver medalist at teh 2008 Olympics in Beijing. He closed out the World Championships with a silver in the 50 backstroke.
 
Arizona junior Kevin Cordes, participating in his first FINA World Championship (Long Course), earned a seventh place finish in the 100 breaststroke, ninth place finish in the 200 breast and 21st in the 50 breast. Teammate Kevin Steel finished 12th in the 50 breaststroke.
 
Michael Meyer, who represented his home country of South Africa, earned a 17th place finish in the 400 individual medley and 26th in the 200 IM. Recent Arizona graduate Nimrod Shapira Bar-Or finished 33rd in the 200 freestyle.
