PHOENIX (AP) -- A few years ago, Zack Greinke refused to shows hitters his full repertoire during spring training.
"I used to think about it that way," he said.
Not any more.
Greinke allowed one hit in three scoreless innings Tuesday as a Milwaukee Brewers' split squad lost to the Seattle Mariners 7-4.
"When the season starts, if you make good pitches you should have success," he said. "The hitters get to see you more but if you make good pitchers you should get results."
Greinke, who pitched one batter into the fourth, struck out five and walked one in his third spring training start. He threw 48 pitches, including a handful of cut fastballs, a new pitch for the right-hander.
"It's just a matter of not falling in love with it," Greinke said. "It's about it using it in the right spots and the right situations."
Half the battle with the cutter, Greinke said, was becoming comfortable with mechanics of throwing the pitch.
"It was more about the process of thinking about throwing it," said Greinke, who started experimenting with the pitch at the start of camp. "Once I got comfortable with the idea, it's felt pretty good."
Alex Liddi hit the go-ahead single and Michael Saunders added a two-run double off Mark Rogers during the Mariners' five-run ninth inning. George Kotteras hit a two-run homer in ninth for the Brewers
John Axford threw a scoreless inning for Milwaukee.
Seattle starter Hector Noesi went three innings, giving up a Travis Ishikawa home run in the second along with two other hits.
Jesus Montero, who entered 7 for 18 with four extra-base hits, struck out in all three of his plate appearances.
NOTES: Brewers 3B Aramis Ramirez ended an 0-for-12 start to spring training with a fourth-inning double off the center-field wall. ... Mariners 1B Justin Smoak had the lone hit off Greinke and doubled against Manny Parra in the seventh. ... Ishikawa's home run was his second.
