CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) -- Starting guards Malcolm Grant and Durand Scott combined for 43 points to lead Miami past Jacksonville 89-77 in the season opener for both teams Friday night.
Grant scored 23 points and Scott finished with 20 as the Hurricanes, of the Atlantic Coast Conference, shook off a tough first-half challenge from the Dolphins, who play in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
Miami took the lead for good with a 12-0 run midway through the second half. Adrian Thomas' second of two 3-pointers during the spurt capped the run with 6:47 remaining and gave the Hurricanes a 76-64 lead.
Grant converted on 7 of 12 shots, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range. Scott finished 8 of 14 from the field, while Reggie Johnson finished with 13 points and Thomas added 12.
Jacksonville led at halftime, 48-42, behind Glenn Powell's 10 first-half points. Powell led the Dolphins with 18 points.
Donovan found plenty else to scrutinize. He wasn't pleased with his team's 15 turnovers and said his guys gave up way too many easy baskets.
"We've got to get more disciplined," Donovan said. "I think that we have a team that can press. We've got to get more disciplined in terms of what we're doing and I do believe we have a chance to be a good pressing team. We've just got to keep getting better at it."
Florida's freshmen give Donovan enough bodies to rotate often and press the entire game. The freshmen were somewhat quiet in their debut, although they showed flashes of ability and plenty of potential throughout the game.
