Gophers top preseason hockey poll

The first USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine preseason poll was released Monday and the University of Minnesota finds itself tied atop the poll with defending national champion Boston College.

The Gophers and Eagles both received 476 total votes, but Boston College garnered 20 first place votes to Minnesota's 12.

Minnesota returns six of its top seven scorers from last year’s Frozen Four team, leading the nation in scoring.

The Gophers are one of five WCHA teams ranked in the preseason Top 15 with North Dakota (4th), Denver (8th), Minnesota-Duluth (12th) and Wisconsin (15th) joining Minnesota in the poll.

This is the last season for the Gophers in the WCHA, as they will join the newly created Big Ten hockey conference for the 2013-14 season.
