MINNEAPOLIS -- One day after being suspended from the men's basketball team following an investigation into a possible domestic assault, Minnesota Gophers guard Daquein McNeil has been charged with two felonies.
McNeil, who allegedly strangled his girlfriend Monday morning at her apartment, was charged with third-degree assault involving substantial bodily harm, as well as domestic assault by strangulation, according to Hennepin County records. McNeil was originally arrested and jailed without bail. Records show he is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 1 at 1:30 p.m. CT.
The University of Minnesota released another statement Wednesday after the charges against McNeil were announced, saying that the sophomore from Baltimore remains suspended from all team activities as the legal process plays out.
"This athletics department remains committed to its values of respect for others and respect for the greater community," Minnesota athletic director Norwood Teague said in the statement. "We will not tolerate domestic assault from any of our staff or student-athletes."
McNeil was used sparingly off the bench for the Gophers last season but was one of the team's most improved players this offseason, head coach Richard Pitino noted earlier in the year. Minnesota was counting on McNeil to provide depth in the backcourt. Now, McNeil's time at Minnesota could well be over.
