Gophers lose at Illinois despite Murphy's double-double
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Kendrick Nunn scored 25, Malcolm Hill added 22 points with seven rebounds and five assists and Illinois beat Minnesota 84-71 Sunday night.
The Illini opened the second half on a 29-8 run for a 61-48 lead and they never looked back.
Freshman Jalen Coleman-Lands hit five 3-pointers and finished with 18 points for Illinois (13-16, 5-11 Big Ten).
Jordan Murphy stepped up with 22 points and 10 rebounds for Minnesota (8-20, 2-14). Stephon Sharp had a career-high 19 points, while Joey King added 17.
Minnesota used an 11-0 run to open the game and had a 40-32 halftime lead, but Illinois outscored the Golden Gophers 52-31 in the second half.
Minnesota was playing without leading scorer Nate Mason (13.8 points per game), as well as guards Kevin Dorsey and Dupree McBrayer, who all missed Sunday's game for a violation of team rules.
