Gophers hockey shut out for first time in conference play

Michigan State goaltender Jake Hildebrand saved 28 shots, as the Spartans handed Minnesota a 5-0 loss Saturday in East Lansing, Mich.

Villiam Haag scored twice for the Spartans (10-21-3, 6-11-1-0) and Mason Appleton, Joe Cox and Michael Ferrantino added goals. It was Michigan State's first win over Minnesota this season in four tries.

Eric Schierhorn took the loss for Minnesota (18-15-0 overall, 13-5-0-0 Big Ten) and saved 10 of 13 shots. Coach Don Lucia benched him for Brock Kautz, who made eight saves on 10 shots in his debut.

The Gophers, who will end the weekend in first place in the Big Ten, close out the regular season next weekend at Mariucci Arena, hosting Wisconsin in Border Battle action.
