Goldschmidt placed on DL with broken hand

PHOENIX -- A Diamondbacks' season in which very little has gone right took another turn for the worse Saturday with the discovery that All-Star first baseman Paul Goldschmit has a fractured left hand.

Goldschmidt's hand was broken when he was hit by an Ernesto Frieri pitch in the ninth inning of Friday night's 9-4 loss to the Pirates. Ironically, Goldschmidt had been out of the starting lineup for only the third time of the season but came in as part of a double switch in the eighth after Pittsburgh had tied the game at 4.

Goldschmidt was placed on the 15-day disabled list, and the Diamondbacks recalled outfielder Alfredo Marte from Triple-A Reno.

Goldschmidt, the starting first baseman for the National League All-Star team, is hitting .300 with 39 doubles, 19 home runs, 75 runs scored, 69 RBI and a .542 slugging percentage. He leads the NL in doubles and extra-base hits, is tied for first in runs, third in RBI and ranks in the top 10 in on-base and slugging percentage, home runs, hits and batting average.

He is the fourth Diamondbacks player to suffer a broken hand when being hit by a pitch in the past two years. Center fielder A.J. Pollock, the only other regular hitting .300, remains out while recovering from his broken hand. Last year, the team lost Aaron Hill and Willie Bloomquist for extensive periods with similar injuries.

The team also has lost three pitchers to Tommy John surgery this season: starters Patrick Corbin and Bronson Arroyo and reliever David Hernandez.

Marte, 25, has 31 at-bats for the Diamondbacks this season and his hitting .258 with one home run. He was batting .319 with 11 home runs for Reno.
