Devin Mesoraco is already among baseball greats like Ken Griffey Jr. in the Reds record books. Wednesday night, he can take sole possession of a franchise mark.
If Mesoraco hits a home run for the sixth straight game, he'll take sole possession of the Reds team record. With his home run Tuesday night, he tied Griffey Jr. (2003), Ted Kluszewski (1954), George Crowe (1957), Johnny Bench (1972), and Adam Dunn (2008) for the Reds club mark of five straight games with a dinger. He's continued the string in dramatic fashion the last two nights, hitting both of his shots in the ninth inning, raising his total for the season to 14.
Achieving the feat would also put him in elite company in major-league history. Only 17 players have hit home runs in at least six straight games. The record is eight, shared by Ken Griffey Jr. (Mariners, 1993), Don Mattingly (Yankees, 1987) and Dale Long (Padres, 1956).
Mesoraco would be only the second catcher to reach the six-game mark. Walker Cooper did it for the Giants in late June of 1947.
Orioles slugger Chris Davis is the most recent player to do it, going deep six games in a row in 2012.
