Germany's Frenzel wins Nordic combined World Cup in Austria
SEEFELD, Austria (AP) Eric Frenzel of Germany won the opening event Friday of a Nordic Combined Triple, which adds the results of all three competitions this weekend with the overall winner earning double World Cup points.
The Olympic champion was fifth after the ski jumping and finished the 5-kilometer cross-country race in 12 minutes, 5.0 seconds. It was Frenzel's sixth straight World Cup win in Seefeld and 19th overall.
Jan Schmid was 2.3 seconds back in second and his Norwegian teammate Jarl Magnus Riiber trailed by 5.7 in third.
Fabian Riessle of Germany placed 31st and failed to score World Cup points but remained in the lead of the standings. Riessle has 376 points, followed by Frenzel on 371.
The second event, which includes a 10K cross country race, is scheduled for Saturday.
