ATHENS, Ga. (AP) After being barred from the deck for the past year, longtime Georgia swimming coach Jack Bauerle will return for the team's next meet.

Bauerle was sanctioned this week by the NCAA for rules violations involving a star swimmer, but the ruling was not clear on exactly when the coach could return from the suspension.

On Friday, the school said Bauerle can coach at practice immediately and lead Georgia's team at a Jan. 3 meet hosted by South Carolina.

Bauerle is one of the nation's most prominent swim coaches, heading the U.S. women's team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He has coached at Georgia since 1979, guiding the women to five national championships.

Bauerle was penalized for arranging an independent studies class to maintain the eligibility of NCAA champion Chase Kalisz.
