FSU's Nick O'Leary out for spring after another motorcycle accident
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Nick O'Leary has been involved in a second motorcycle accident in just less than a year, Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher said after Wednesday's practice.
O'Leary is "skinned from head to toe" and has a swollen ankle, Fisher said. He will miss the rest of spring practice for the Seminoles.
The tight end launched himself over his motorcycle on May 2, 2013, before it collided with a car near the Florida State campus. O'Leary was wearing a helmet and was able to walk away from that accident, and in August he said he would not ride a motorcycle again while in college.
"I'm done with them ... at least until I'm done playing football," O'Leary said in August.
O'Leary made a full recovery and had one of the best seasons ever by a Florida State tight end in 2013. He had 33 catches for 557 yards and seven touchdowns, and was one of three finalists for the John Mackey Award, presented annually to the nation's top college tight end. O'Leary has 11 career touchdowns, the most of any tight end in school history.
Fisher was not aware of the details of the most recent accident and said he was not sure if O'Leary was wearing a helmet (it's not required that motorcyclists in Florida wear helmets).
But Fisher was clearly bothered by a second motorcycle accident.
"I can be frustrated," Fisher said. "He needs to be frustrated. It's not important if I'm frustrated. What's important is if he's frustrated."
Florida State's other two tight ends are also returning from season-ending surgeries that they had in 2013. Kevin Haplea and Jeremy Kerr both had knee injuries over the summer.
