FSU picked 9th, Miami 12th in ACC preseason hoops poll

Miami and Florida State will have a long way to go if they want to return to the top of the Atlantic Coast Conference basketball standings this season.

The Hurricanes, the defending ACC champions but a team that will feature a completely new starting five, were picked to finish 12th in the now 15-team conference that also includes Syracuse, Notre Dame and Pittsburgh.

Florida State, which returns four starters but loses sharpshooter Michael Snaer, was picked to place ninth. The Seminoles won the first ACC title in program history in 2011-12.

Duke received 50 of 54 first-place votes and 805 points overall in balloting by media members that attended Wednesday's ACC Operation Basketball. Syracuse was second with 753 points and North Carolina third at 668.

C.J. Fair of Syracuse was chosen as the ACC's preseason player of the year. Fair, who led the Orange in scoring (14.5 ppg) and rebounding (7.0 rpg) last season.

No Florida State or Miami player made the preseason team.

Duke’s Jabari Parker, a 6-foot-8, 235-pound forward from Chicago, was the overwhelming choice as ACC Preseason Rookie of the Year on 52 of the 54 ballots cast.
