Fryer becomes a free agent as Cards move forward with Kelly

Former Cardinals backup catcher Eric Fryer is now a free agent after being designated for assignment by the club last week.

The Cardinals announced Fryer elected for free agency on Monday. Fryer was taken off the 40-man roster to make room for catcher Carson Kelly from Triple-A Memphis.

Fryer, 31, was batting .155 with three RBIs in 71 at-bats (34 games) for the Cardinals. He went 1-for-3 in his final game with the team.

Kelly was batting .283 with 10 home runs and 41 RBIs in 83 games at Memphis before the call-up. He's 1-for-6 with two RBIs and a run scored in his short time with the Cardinals this season.
