GREEN BAY, Wis. -- After 33 career starts for the Green Bay Packers, offensive tackle Marshall Newhouse has found a new team. Newhouse, who was an unrestricted free agent this offseason, signed with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Despite Newhouse's experience as a starter, the Packers had little use in retaining him. Though he's still only 25 years old, Newhouse showed very little progress in recent years.
With David Bakhtiari, Bryan Bulaga, Don Barclay and Derek Sherrod all under contract next season and ahead of Newhouse on the depth chart, Green Bay decided to move on from its 2010 fifth-round draft pick.
Newhouse is the fourth player from the Packers' 2013 roster to sign with another team this offseason. Wide receiver James Jones signed with the Oakland Raiders, center Evan Dietrich-Smith signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, M.D. Jennings signed with the Chicago Bears and now Newhouse has gone to the Bengals.
Green Bay still has nine of its own unrestricted free agents to consider re-signing, including tight end Jermichael Finley, quarterback Matt Flynn and fullback John Kuhn. The Packers have around $15 million in 2014 salary cap space that they can spend.
