FOX survivor football picks for Week 5
Survive and advance is a popular sports mantra normally saved for the month of March and the madness that comes with it.
But thanks to the rapid growth of the NFL and fantasy football, games like FOX Fantasy Survivor can feed your craving for “win or go home” competition seven months early.
Over 25,000 football fans signed up and participated in the FOX Fantasy Survivor game last season. The hope is, with cash prizes on the line, we can eclipse that mark in 2011.
The premise is simple: pick one (1) team who you believe is going to win that week. The survivor catch remains that once you pick a team to win, you can’t pick that team again for the rest of the season. The good news is, even if you lose, you are still eligible to win cash prizes.
To assist you with your survivor selections, the FOXSports.com’s fantasy football staff will provide you their picks for the week.
Just remember the mantra: survive and advance. In a couple months, you could be $2,000 richer.
Week 4 Recap
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers dominated the Indianapolis Colts in time of possession 39 minutes to 21. Still, it took a late fourth-quarter LeGarrette Blount touchdown to put the horses to sleep Monday night. The 27-20 victory down by the bay moved Halpin and Fowler to 4-0 on the season.
Harmon turned his back on the man that helped him win in Week 3. Although Cam Newton’s touchdown pass to Greg Olsen with three seconds remaining crushed the proverbial soul of those degenerates who laid some coin on the Panthers vs. Bears game, but it wasn’t enough to knock the Swollen Dome from the ranks of the unbeaten.
Beall went with the smart play of Week 4. Blaine Gabbert and Jacksonville were far from a threat to New Orleans. Tight end, Jimmy Graham, used the road game as his coming out party. He finished with 10 catches for 132 yards and a touchdown against the Jags. Kicker John Kasay finished the job in the second half with his three field goals.
It was a perfect ending to another perfect 4-0 weekend for the FOXSports.com fantasy department’s Survivor picks.
Now we have to deal with the first batch of bye weeks.
Week 5 Picks
Halpin – Jaguars
Editor’s Commentary: While submitting his FOX Survivor selection this week, Halpin made a note to point out that “one of my survivor strategies has always been to bet on rookie QBs with preppy names.” He was just kidding … right? Still, pretty hilarious.
With a nasty slate of games to pick from, Halpin was unable to go with the clubhouse leader, Giants, as he chose them in Week 2 to beat the Rams. Remember that barn burner?
Instead, he must rely on Blaine Gabbert to dissect the top defense in the NFL. As mentioned in my Week 5 Start ‘Em Sit ‘Em gallery, the Bengals have allowed 275.5 yards per game, total. That’s rushing plus passing yards! Maurice Jones-Drew will need to carry most of the load as Gabby is only completing 47.8 percent of his passes (yes, one start was played in torrential rain).
If Halpin nails this pick, he should pray for Christian Ponder to start in Minnesota.
Harmon, Beall and Fowler - Giants
Editor’s Commentary: Tavaris Jackson throws for 319 yards and three touchdowns against the Falcons in a two-point loss and the following week this trio picks the Giants to beat the Seahawks. I’m not sure if this is more a condemnation of Jackson’s inability to perform on the road or Atlanta’s defense.
Seattle currently ranks 28th in passing and 31st in rushing offense. A sub-par (try to refrain from saying “depleted” for a few weeks) Giants’ defense should be able to contain the likes of Marshawn Lynch and Justin Forsett at home. The one threat the ‘Hawks possess is Jackson to Sidney Rice. In two games, Rice has already racked up 11 receptions for 188 yards. If New York can slow him down, the Giants should roll.
