FOX Sports West 2017 HS Football Rankings: Week 2
Greg Biggins of Scout.com breaks down his latest rankings for the CIF-SS football season.
Rank (Previous) School Record
1. (1) Mater Dei, 2-0
The Monarchs broke Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman's 55 game winning streak with a dominant performance on both sides of the ball. Mater Dei's play on the offensive and defensive lines was the difference maker as they protected QB JT Daniels and harassed Gael QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson all game long.
2. (3) St. John Bosco, 1-1
The Braves took out their frustration following their tough week 0 loss on Bakersfield Garces, rolling to an easy 63-0 win. The Braves have the top defense in the country and if the offense continues to roll, watch out. QBs Re-Al Mitchell and DJ Uigaleilei were both very impressive and DB Stephan Blaylock took an interception back for six.
3. (2) Centennial (Corona), 1-1
The Huskies were up early on Bradenton (Fla.) iMG Academy but an injury to star quarterback Tanner McKee proved too much to overcome.
The Huskies battled hard and look improved on the defensive side of the ball. If McKee returns healthy, they'll make a run.
4. (4) Mission Viejo, 2-0
The Diablos rolled over an always tough Vista Murrieta team 41-7. Junior RB Jamari Ferrell and QB Joey Yellen had big games and the usual suspects, Austin Osborne, Olaijah Griffin and Christian LaValle, had standout performances as well. A tough La Habra team is up next.
5. (5) Long Beach Poly, 2-0
Knocked off Harbor City (Calif.) Narbonne 14-10 in a game that was as physical as anticipated. The defense stepped up big and made plays at all three levels and QB Matt Corral was clutch late in the game to complete the comeback. Jackrabbits have a bye this week and then Mission Viejo in two weeks.
6. (6) Orange Lutheran, 2-0
San Diego power Cathedral Catholic won a state title last year but were no match for the Lancers as Orange Lu rolled 37-0. Junior QB Ryan Hilinski was efficient throughout but the defense is what really impressed, shutting down Cathedral's usual high powered running game.
7. (7) Chaminade, 2-0
The Eagles were too tough for Phoenix (Ariz.) Mountain Pointe, a perennial powerhouse in the Desert State, winning 39-25 in a game that wasn't that close. Andrew VanBuren led the way once again with four touchdowns and the Eagles will take on St. John Bosco in the Game of the Week this Friday on Prime Ticket.
8. (8) JSerra, 2-0
Running back Al Fisher rushed for over 200 yards and Jamiel Henning returned two punts for touchdowns as the Lions took out Alemany 48-27. A solid Bishop Amat team is on deck for the JSerra.
9. (9) Rancho Cucamonga, 2-0
Norco gave the Cougars all they could handle but big plays from QB Nick Acosta helped Rancho walk out with a tough road win. The Cougs have a bye this week and then will take on Bishop Amat in two weeks.
10. (10) Upland, 2-0
Junior QB David Baldwin threw six touchdown passes as the Highlanders rolled to an easy 62-3 win over Claremont. Upland has tremendous team speed and is playing very good defense as well.
