Fowler's quick thoughts on his fantasy mock draft 1.0

The FOXSports.com fantasy staff and some honored guests held a fantasy football mock draft on Tuesday, July 1. The complete results are at the link below, so we won’t bore you with the complete play-by-play, but let’s review some of the more interesting aspects of the festivities, from beginning to end. The draft was for a FOXSports.com standard scoring league (no PPR), and included 15 rounds.

Aside from the great-Cincinnati internet outage of 2014 (our thanks to World Cup fans sucking up the bandwidth), I was pleased with my first 12 rounds.  Fantasy owners often fall in love with their mock draft rosters and I’d definitely be interested to play this team out during the regular season.

By possessing the second overall pick, I avoided the Peyton Manning and Drew Brees internal struggle of whether or not to select them just because they were available at the back-end of the first or start of the second round.  Halpin is a huge proponent of waiting on a quarterback and that shift to a pass-happy league has created plenty of fantasy quarterback value as late as the eighth or ninth round (see: Brady, Tom).  Granted, Manning, Brees, and, perhaps, Aaron Rodgers are in their own tier, but the 2012 quarterback class and some junior and senior classmen have truly opened the door for owners to wait.

I’m a huge fan of my running back corps with Jamaal Charles, Chris Johnson and Rashad Jennings all in position for 250-plus touches.  The wildcard remains CJ (missed one game in entire career) who may have a different role with the Jets in 2014, but that’s why Chris Ivory was handcuffed early just in case the RBBC grows in scope.  Jennings has little threat behind him unless, ya know, he fumbles the ball early on in the season and takes up residence inside coach Coughlin’s doghouse like so many have in the past.

Brandon Marshall was a no-brainer WR1 selection and paired up with a healthy Roddy White - who turned it on the final month of the last season - I like the possibilities.  My bench is also wide receiver heavy with Mike Evans possessing the most potential considering Vincent Jackson does require plenty of attention from defensive backs.

I wasn’t a fan of drafting Delanie Walker (auto selection during internet outage), but believe I waited too long to draft a TE.  Walker has a higher ceiling than most tight ends drafted after the 12th round, but the stars do need to align in Tennessee.
