Four-game winning streak ends for UA women
The Arizona women's basketball team fell to Stephen F. Austin 72-60 on Saturday evening in Nacogdoches, Texas, snapping a season-high four-game winning streak.
Senior guard Candice Warthen scored a team-high 16 points, including 12 in the second half, while LaBrittney Jones nearly recorded a double-double, putting in 10 points and grabbing a team-high nine rebounds. Warthen and Jones lead the team in double-figure scoring outings this season with six each.
Freshman guard Charise Holloway contributed eight points, three rebounds and two steals off the bench, while sophomore forward Dejza James chipped in with five points, six rebounds and one steal in just 12 minutes.
The Wildcats (6-4) fell behind 18-11 with 7:56 remaining in the first half, but launched a 6-0 run to come within 18-17 with 6:27 left after Warthen stole the ball and took it the other way for a layup.
Arizona eventually outscored the Ladyjacks 14-5 over the final eight minutes of the half to take a 25-23 advantage into the intermission, as the Wildcats scored 10 points off 10 forced turnovers.
Jones extended Arizona's lead to 27-23 after knocking down a mid-range jumper on UA's opening possession of the second half, but SFA was able to catch fire from the field, knocking down 15 of 28 second half field goals (53.6 percent).
SFA held its biggest lead at 59-42 with 4:06 remaining. Arizona battled back to eventually cut the deficit down to single digits, but time ran out on the rally.
The Wildcats return home to conclude their non-conference slate, taking on Tennessee Martin on Dec. 29 at 7 p.m. at McKale Center.
