Former Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb, the 2006 National League Cy Young Award winner, is officially retiring from baseball, according to his agents.
Webb, 33, announced his retirement Monday in a statement released by agents Jonathan Maurer and Mike Montana.
"With retirement, Brandon looks forward to focusing on more time with his family," the statement said. "He would like to thank all the countless coaches, players and friends for their support during his career."
Webb hadn't pitched in the majors since Opening Day 2009 due to shoulder problems. He had signed a minor league contract with the Rangers organization in 2011 and had been pursuing another comeback attempt before announcing his retirement.
Webb, known for a dominant sinker, was named an All-Star three times in his career, which saw him average 227 innings a season with the Diamondbacks from 2004-08.
In 2006, he finished with a 16-8 record and a 3.10 ERA. Over the following two seasons, he posted a combined 40-17 record and finished second in the Cy Young balloting each time. An eighth-round pick of the D-backs in the 2000 draft, Webb retires with a career 87-62 record and 3.27 ERA in 199 games, 198 of them starts.
