There was very little doubt that the series would go away, but on Thursday it became official: Florida and Florida State will continue to play football through the 2018 season.

Florida will host in 2015 and '17, while Florida State will host in 2016 and '18.

The contract was set to expire after the teams played in Tallahassee on Nov. 29. Florida and Florida State have played every year since 1958. The Gators lead the overall series 34-22-2, though the Seminoles have won three of the last four meetings, including a 37-7 victory last season.

''We will always have Florida on our schedule,'' Florida State senior associate athletics director Monk Bonasorte said last week.

Florida also announced that it would host East Carolina on Sept. 12, 2015.
