Final report card: Georgia Tech

This was one of the most forgettable seasons in Georgia Tech history on the court.

The Yellow Jackets split home games between two venues, one nearly an hour from campus. They suffered some terrible losses (St. Joe’s, Tulane, Mercer, Fordham), had just one notable win (at N.C. State in early January), and their best player was suspended late in the season and later kicked off the team for good.

But, new coach Brian Gregory knows it can’t possibly be worse, so the program will now move forward. It opens a new on-campus arena in the fall, recruiting is going well, and Gregory has scored high marks with most of the players so far.

That said, this is a report card, and you can’t score marks on stuff that hasn’t happened yet.

Tech finished the season 11-20 overall and 4-12 in the ACC, which was tied for last place with three other teams.

Here is Tech’s report card from this season:

GT offense: The Yellow Jackets were 11th in the ACC in scoring at 60.2 points per game, dead last in free throw percentage (65.4), ninth in field goal percentage (42.7), last in 3-point percentage (31.2), and 11th in assists. Tech struggled to score consistently inside, outside, and with how it ran its offense. It can only get better. Grade: F.

GT defense: Tech was much better defensively, finishing fourth in scoring defense (62.6), defensive field goal percentage (40.3), ninth in 3-point defense (34.7), and third in blocked shots. But the offense’s inability to consistently score put so much pressure on the Jackets defensively that at times they just wilted. Grade: C.

GT intangibles: Somehow, Gregory managed to keep most of his team, Glen Rice Jr. notwithstanding. The Jackets could have easily packed it in at any time once conference play began but didn’t. There were some ugly performances for sure, but the team kept its focus for the most part. Grade: C+.

GT final grade: Hey, the program got through a season everyone associated with it dreaded. It’s behind them now. The team did not play well and it didn’t establish much of a foundation for the future. But, it made it through. It can only get better from here. Grade: F.
