Fedora’s debut brings points aplenty

Larry Fedora carried a Red Bull with him into his postgame press conference today.
Shocker.
Fedora, the first-year head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels, brings an energy that is evident within the first few words out of his mouth. At ACC Media Days, he was the man media members flocked to for no apparent reason other than all the other writers at his table were laughing loudly. He dominates a room.
He also dominated Elon in his first appearance as the Tar Heels’ head coach. His high-powered offense he brought over from Southern Miss worked like a charm against the overmatched FCS opponent, as it gained 524 total yards and posted 62 points in a shutout win.
Standout quarterback Bryn Renner ran the new offense well enough — 14-for-21 passing with 236 yards, three touchdowns and one interception — but there will certainly be season-long adjustments for him. Fedora has said on multiple occasions that Renner is not nearly where he will be eventually. That’s a scary thought for Elon.
First team All-SEC running back Giovani Bernard lived up to the honor, running for 93 yards and a score on just nine carries.
North Carolina will not be able to compete for the ACC title or a bowl game this season, but if the offense can continue to function at such a high level, it could ruin some postseason dreams for plenty of other conference foes.
And, surely, Larry Fedora is pumped up about that.
