FAU falls at home to UAB after field goal in final seconds

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) -- Ty Long kicked the game-winning field goal with 3 seconds to play, giving the Alabama-Birmingham the edge over Florida Atlantic 31-28 Saturday night.

Long's 24-yarder won it for the Blazers (5-4, 3-2 Conference USA) after FAU rallied from a 21-point deficit to score three fourth-quarter touchdowns and tie the game 28-28 with 4:03 left to play.

Cody Clements completed 16 of 26 passes for 184 yards and a touchdown for UAB. Jordan Howard scored twice and ran for 167 yards on 35 carries.

The Blazers dominated the first half, scoring on a pair of touchdown runs by Howard, another by D.J. Vinson, and a 78-yard pass from Clements to Jamarcus Nelson. The defense held the FAU to 46 yards total offense in the first half and UAB led 28-7 at the break.

Jaquez Johnson threw for 177 yards and three touchdowns for the Owls (3-6, 2-3).
