Fantasy impact: Hasselbeck injures ribs
A fractured a rib in Philadelphia's opener forced Donovan McNabb to the sidelines for Week 2.
That's why I'm not optimistic about Matt Hasselbeck's chances for a Week 3 return after he reportedly suffered the same fractured rib injury in San Francisco this past Sunday.
Hasselbeck took a hard hit late in the second quarter as he dove near the San Francisco goal-line, making his injury almost a carbon copy of the one we saw McNabb sustain a week earlier. There is no official word on Hasselbeck's Week 3 status, but like the Eagles did with McNabb, I'd be surprised if the Seahawks rushed him straight back into action so early in the season, especially since Seneca Wallace actually ran the offense pretty capably in Hasselbeck's absence on Sunday. Even if the final score didn't reflect it.
That's why Wallace isn't that bad of a Week 3 pickup for Hasselbeck owners out there. Really, why not? The offense didn't miss much of a beat when he entered the game, and he ended up posting an efficient 15-for-23, 127-yard, one-TD performance. Yes, Seattle has a tough matchup coming up with the Bears, but you're not going to get much more than a serviceable quarterback off the waiver wire at this point, and Wallace is capable of delivering that against the Bears.
Kevin Kolb wouldn't be a terrible Week 3 pickup, either, since he'll be going against a defense which is still very much in rebuilding mode. Granted, Kolb probably won't throw for 391 yards and two scores again, but he'll probably make his second straight start before the Eagles get to their Week 4 bye and give McNabb what will then be a month to recover from his rib injury before he's required to take the field again. I'd be willing to bet Kolb is still available in a high number of leagues, but he's only a temporary bandaid solution and should be able to get you through Week 3 just fine.
We'll keep an eye on Hasselbeck's status and update you as the week goes on. Stay tuned.
