Fantasy Impact: Harvin hip surgery

BY Ryan Fowler • July 30, 2013

Seattle's Percy Harvin will miss the next three-to-four months after he undergoes hip surgery on Thursday in New York. Fantasy football owners, especially those in Harvin-friendly keeper leagues, will be thrilled to know this hip issue has been nagging him since the spring.

So, had he elected for surgery back then, recovery and rehab would have had him back on the field for most, if not all, of the 2013 regular season.  Don't get me wrong, I'm sure plenty of football variables impact whether or not to go under the knife, but it's worth noting that his hips weren't lying back in the spring. NFL reporter Mike Garafolo's report cited sources that said Harvin could have played through the injury and NFL medical expert Dr. Mark Adickes echoed some of the same opinions in this Laces Out blog entry.

So, what does this mean in terms of preparing for upcoming 2013 fantasy football drafts?

Well, Harvin has been removed from the Top 200 fantasy football rankings and isn't worth a roster stash at this time. As word of rehab starts to trickle out in August, September and October, owners will have to be quick on the waiver wire draw if they want to try and scoop up Harvin for the fantasy playoffs — if he does return at all. Too many ifs to warrant a roster spot the next three months.

As funny as it sounds, the trickle down fantasy impact on the Seattle Seahawks isn't that great. Russell Wilson loses a weapon that he didn't need, but would have liked to work with in 2013. He's still a fantasy quarterback I would target around the fifth round. Marshawn Lynch remains a top five fantasy pick overall.

Sidney Rice finished 32nd and Golden Tate finished 33rd in fantasy points scored among wide receivers last season. The duo receives a slight bump in the fantasy football rankings with Rice locked in as a WR3 and Tate a WR4.
