Ex-Viking Birk takes NFL office job

Matt Birk's post-playing career is going to keep him in the NFL.

The former Minnesota Vikings center who went on to win the Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens was named director of football development by the NFL on Thursday.

A six-time Pro Bowl selection, Birk will "assist in developing the game at all levels of the sport, from players to coaches to front office personnel. He will also assist in the administration of NFL game day operations," according to a release.

Birk will also "guide the continued evolution of the Scouting Combine and regional combines as well as the annual all-star games for aspiring NFL players, such as the Senior Bowl and East-West Shrine game," according to the release.

Birk retired after winning the Super Bowl following the 2012 season and spent last season working as an NFL and NFL Players' Association appeals officer.

"I'm very excited to begin this next chapter of my football career," Birk said in the release. "It's a real honor for me to be entrusted with developing the game in so many different ways."

Birk is the eighth former player to join the league office, joining Merton Hanks, Dwight Hollier, Patrick Kerney, James Thrash, David Tyree, Troy Vincent and Charles Way.

A native of St. Paul, Birk will play a leading role in the continuing evolution and emergence of the Career Development Symposium. He'll oversee the Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship program and NFL-NCAA Future Football Coaches Academy initiative.

Birk, who spent 10 years with the Vikings, will serve as a liaison for the league on international development as well as work with the league's high school player development program.
