Everything's bigger in Texas ... including the latest gifts for Jeff Gordon
Jeff Gordon has received a host of tributes from tracks in his final season in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, but as they say, everything is bigger in Texas.
Friday at Texas Motor Speedway, track president Eddie Gossage presented Gordon with a litany of gifts, but the four-time champion was not ready for the biggest gift of the day.
After Gordon received a street sign of Gordon Road, custom cowboy boots and more, Gossage donned a cowboy hat and walked two ponies into the media center.
Gordon, not surprisingly, couldn't believe his eyes.
The two ponies were gifts for Gordon's two kids, Ella and Leo, and Gossage definitely did not clear it with their dad first.
"You have no idea the thoughts that are going through my head right now," Gordon said with a smile.
"We've already told Ella and Leo, so they know about them," Gossage told Gordon.
Gossage wants to make sure Gordon is prepared, too. He also presented the Hendrick Motorsports driver with his own shovel to clean up after the new additions to the family.
After having fun with the ponies and other gifts, Gossage took time to honor Gordon and his impact on the sport.
"With all due respect to drivers like Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt, Jeff is perhaps the most important driver in NASCAR history," Gossage said. "He was the most transformative driver our sport has seen. He won races and championships while changing the perception of people around the globe about NASCAR race-car drivers. He successfully guest-hosted shows like 'Saturday Night Live' and 'Live with Regis and Kelly,' introducing a whole new audience to racing. It's no coincidence our sport enjoyed unprecedented growth during his prime years. Jeff is a champion in every way.”
