Everybody loves Ronaldo: U.S. soccer fans have a moment with Portuguese star
Despite losing 1-0 to Germany Thursday afternoon, the United States men's national team will advance to the round of 16. And that's thanks partly to internationally-disliked Portuguese superstar striker Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored in the eightieth minute against Ghana, putting Portugal up 2-1, a score that would hold and allow the U.S. to advance on goal difference.
Things were looking dicey for the Americans late in the second half as they trailed Germany, looked completely gassed, minus Jermaine Jones and Alejandro Bedoya who collided and lay on the ground like matching corpses.
Needless to say, Ronaldo's goal came as a tremendous relief to U.S. backers, as even a Portugal-Ghana draw would send the U.S. along. Incidentally, Ronaldo helped break the Americans' hearts on Sunday with a beautiful assist to Silvestre Varela that prevented the U.S. from securing a berth right then and there. But all is well that ends well!
Now, everybody loves Ronaldo!
